2001 Census

Background

The Census Dissemination Unit at Mimas will be holding all the Census Aggregate Outputs (CAO) - these are statistics from the 2001 Census of Population held on Sunday 29 April 2001.

The Census Aggregate Outputs are, generally speaking, counts of people or households for geographical areas broken down by socio-demographic characteristics (e.g. age, gender, employment). These statistics are contained in a series of tables on a specific topic or area of interest, for instance Key Statistics Table 15 - KS015 - is titled 'Travel to Work' and holds data on the methods employed by people to travel to work).

The censuses in England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland were organised and held seperately and, while there are many similarities, there are also enough differences to think of them as seperate datasets. In order to cope with these differences, we have divided the 2001 Census area up into seperate sections which can be accessed from the menu at the top of this page.

Getting the Data

The 2001 Census Area Statistics are available to download using the Casweb web application. A 'Login to Casweb' button is provided in the left hand menu. Access to the data is by the use of Athens userids and is available free of charge to all staff and students at UK higher and further education establishments.
